Last night Brian decided to go next door and get our neighbor Scott to give him permission to use his fire bowl. Scott likes fires as well, so when Sarah and I went outside we found them poking at a fire lit by gasoline. Brian had shoved leaves in between logs as kindling, which seemed to work at first. But once it burned up, the fire went out. On top of that - the boys were so buzzed they kept smothering the fire trying to tend to it. It's kinda like cooking a good steak. You have to leave it alone and only turn it once, not smash in down flipping it repeatedly, or God forbid - cutting into it while it's cooking. But they would not give the fire a chance to breath. They would see flames, get excited and smother it with leaves.
It was cold last night. Very cold. A fire sounded nice. But instead, we got to sit outside for 2 hours freezing, drunk, waiting for brief moments of fire surges. Brian had used a few small logs from our tree branches - they wouldn't light. He soaked them in gasoline. Yes, it burned for a bit, but died down to red coals every time leaving the logs in almost perfect condition. Scott and Brian were so determined to get it lit, they used every magazine they could find - all the gasoline we had for the lawnmower - and STILL couldn't get a fire started. Sarah and I laughed and laughed.
We told Scott that as soon as the fire was out again we were going in to finish Halloween (got it on bootleg, didn't pay to see it) Scott said, "You'll be feeling stupid here in a minute when we get all boyscout on this thing and it's blazing." Sarah laughed and said, "Tracy, we'll be watching the movie in about five minutes."
We watched the fire go out about a dozen times in an hour. I have never seen a fire that didn't want to light. It was amazing. Scott tried to light a magazine and it wouldn't burn either! They got their pride hurt as we went in and got settled in on the movie again. They tried to make amends by offering a game of Monopoly. By that time, it was close to 1 am and I was just about ready to study the back of my eye lids for as long as I could.
Today - Ohio State whooped the holy shit out of Michigan. it was beautiful. Fourth year in a row. My neighbor's roommate Matt is a Michigan fan (he was born and raised there) and was actually up there at the game. So, Sarah and I bought 4 big sheets of red poster board and 2 silver sharpie markers and plan to make an OHIO sign. He will see it as soon as he pulls in the driveway after a long drive from a losing game. LOL : ) I am hoping I do not offend the wrong people and get my house egged.
